Ransomware Cryptolocker Prisonlocker Computer SecurityPrisonLocker, or Power Locker, is a new twist on the CryptoLocker “ransomware,” and is one of the most serious computer security threats in recent memory. You should be concerned about it. As a recap, Cryptolocker is a form of “ransomware,” which essentially takes your data “hostage” by encrypting it and charging you hundreds of dollars to unencrypt and retrieve your data.  (Click here to see our previous post about CryptoLocker.)

What makes PrisonLocker more sinister is that it is a DIY ransomware kit, which is sold to other cyber criminals. These individuals can then make their own CryptoLocker spinoffs, which we are already seeing. The kit costs $100. At a mere hundred dollars, it is guaranteed that we will see an influx of ransomware hitting computers shortly. So how can you avoid PrisonLocker and maintain your computer security?

Aaron Sherrill, Claris Networks’ Chief Technology Officer and Dan Thompson, our resident Tech Expert, discuss PrisonLocker and what you should do to avoid it in this week’s “What’s Up in Tech” video. In addition, they will also answer some of the following questions:

  • What is Cryptolocker and ransomware? Why is it spreading so much?
  • How is this different from regular viruses that our AntiVirus software typically handle?
  • What should we do to avoid this?
  • Does paying the ransom work?

What’s Up in Tech – Business Edition: “CryptoLocker, PrisonLocker and Ransomware”

In summary, there are two primary actions you can take to avoid ransomware and viruses in general:

  1. Have a backup of your important data, preferably one not directly connected to your network.
  2. Be overly cautious when opening email attachments and links
