After losing market share to competitors’ smartphones boasting bigger screens and better cameras, Apple has flexed its microchip muscles and bounced back in the smartphone game a big way, unveiling its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in time for Christmas 2014.
So for all the Apple fans out there, how does the new iPhone 6 stack up to older versions of iPhone? Here’s a quick primer on six of iPhone 6’s new features:
One - It’s Bigger (a lot bigger)
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the biggest ever made. How big? So big the 6 Plus is the company’s first “phablet” – a cross between a phone and a tablet. The 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen compared to the 4-inch screen found on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen. Basically, it’s bigger. And if you’re like me, soon-to-be upgrading from the 4s, it’s a lot bigger.
Two – Upgraded Camera
Apple’s designers have upgraded the camera for iPhone 6 models. Among the improvements, iPhone 6 Plus’s camera has “focus pixels” which allow users to get quicker and more reliable autofocus on images while new “optical image stabilization” will mean less blurriness on video and still photographs.
Three – Sharper Images
Images on the iPhone 6 will be sharper and crisper than images on any other iPhone. That’s because the iPhone 6 Plus has the best resolution of any iPhone with 1920 x 1080 HD resolution and 401 pixels per inch. The iPhone 6 isn’t too far behind with 1334 x 750 resolution at 326 pixels per inch.
Four – Bigger Battery
The bigger iPhone 6 has a bigger battery, making it stronger than any earlier iPhone. The iPhone 6 Plus has up to 24 hours of talk time and the iPhone 6 has 14 hours of talk time. The longer battery life also means you’ll have more power to surf the Internet and longer video playback than with earlier iPhones.
Five – Apple Pay
The new iPhone models will be the first iPhones to allow users to use Apple’s new Apple Pay program. Instead of using actual debit and credit cards to make purchases, Apple Pay uses “contactless payment technology” and new security features to protect your identity and financial information.
Six – Gamer’s Paradise
The new iPhones should give gamers longer sustained performance without the phone slowing down because of heat. Apple is introducing its new A8 processor, which is apparently 25% faster than the A7 with a new graphics microchip that’s 50% faster than earlier models. Designed for sustained performance, gamers can play more demanding games and apps without risking an overheated phone.
The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus hit shelves Sept. 19.
