A new virus has been going around by the name of CryptoLocker. Like other Malware, your computer becomes infected when you open a malicious attachment or link, or install a malicious program. What makes this virus unique, however, is what it does and what you must do once you get it.
Dan Thompson of Claris Networks appeared on Fox 43-TV in Knoxville this week to discuss the virus. Watch the video to learn what it does, how you can protect yourself, and how to get it off your computer. Or skip the video and read the summary below.
What CryptoLocker Does
If your device has the CryptoLocker virus, you will see an image like the one below.
CryptoLocker is what is known as “Ransomware”. It essentially “kidnaps” all the files on your computer (JPGs, PDFs, DOCs, etc) and encrypts them so you cannot access them. If you have a current backup of your files, then you will not need to take the next steps to decrypt your files. Simply run your antivirus software and uninstall CryptoLocker. However, if you do not have a backup and need to retrieve your files, see below.
How to Remove CryptoLocker and Get Your Files Back
To remove Cryptolocker and regain access to your files, you must pay $200 (via BitCoin or MoneyPack) within 72 hours of getting the virus. If you are unable to pay the $200 within the 72 hour countdown, your “ransom” price rises to 10 BitCoins, roughly $2,000. We highly recommend taking any measures you can to avoid paying to retrieve your files. So only pay the ransom if there is no other way to get your files back and you absolutely have to have them.
